Phase-field descriptions of interfacial dynamics are often based on the van der Waals-Cahn-Hilliard functional that consists of a gradient-square term and a double-well term, both properly scaled. It has long been proved that such functions converge to the surface area. The variations of such functionals define the interfacial forces. We prove the convergence of such forces to the mean curvature. This work was motivated by the study of a phase-field model for molecular solvation. I will present the related results if time permits. This is joint work with Jianfeng Lu and Shibin Dai.
